Rishikesh Trip from Dehradun: Complete Guide to Rafting, Aarti, Stay & Itinerary

June 21, 2026 8 min read Himalaya Highlanders Team

Rishikesh is one of those places that means something different to everyone who visits. For some it's a rafting and adventure trip. For others it's yoga retreats and evening aarti on the Ganga. For many travellers from Dehradun it's simply the most convenient quick escape — 45 minutes to an hour by road, completely different in character from the city, and genuinely good value. This guide covers everything: what to do, where to stay, how to get there from Dehradun, and how to plan the trip properly whether you have one day or five.

Dehradun to Rishikesh: Getting There

Rishikesh is 43 km from Dehradun — closer than most people expect. By road it takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. The route goes through Doiwala and Rishikesh town; the road is decent and well-maintained. Options for the journey:

  • Private cab from Dehradun: The most comfortable option for families or groups. A sedan one-way is ₹1,200–1,800, an Innova Crysta ₹2,000–2,800. If you're hiring a cab for a full Rishikesh day trip from Dehradun and back, a round-trip package is usually ₹2,200–3,200 for a sedan depending on waiting time.
  • Shared taxi / Vikram from Dehradun: Available from Dehradun ISBT and Parade Ground area. Very cheap (₹80–120 per person) but drops you at Rishikesh bus stand rather than any specific point in town, and timing is unpredictable.
  • Bus: UPSRTC and Uttarakhand Roadways run regular buses from Dehradun to Rishikesh — fine for solo travellers with light luggage and flexible timing.

For anyone who wants to then continue from Rishikesh toward Haridwar, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, or further into Garhwal — a private cab from Dehradun that you keep for the full trip is by far the most practical arrangement.

What to Do in Rishikesh — The Honest List

Rishikesh splits broadly into two zones: the area around Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula (the main tourist and ashram belt), and the stretch north of town toward Shivpuri and Byasi where the adventure activities happen. These are 10–15 km apart and have a completely different feel. Most visitors try to do both on the same trip.

Rafting on the Ganga

River rafting is the single most popular activity in Rishikesh — and it genuinely is as good as the reputation suggests. The Ganga through this stretch has solid Grade II–IV rapids depending on which section you run, and the river corridor with forested hills on both sides is a beautiful setting for it. The three main stretches are:

  • Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km): The most popular run. 3–4 hours on the water, Grade II–III rapids, suitable for first-timers. Most rafting packages in Rishikesh default to this stretch.
  • Marine Drive to Rishikesh (26 km): Longer run with more rapids including Grade III–IV sections. Better for people who've rafted before.
  • Kaudiyala to Rishikesh (36 km): The full stretch, used for multi-day river camps. Grade IV rapids included. Not for first-timers.

Rafting season is September to June. July and August are off-season — the river runs fast and muddy in monsoon and most operators close. Cost for the Shivpuri run typically ranges from ₹600 to ₹1,200 per person depending on the operator and whether a meal is included.

Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat

The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat happens every day at sunset (roughly 6–6:30 PM) and is one of the more genuinely moving experiences Rishikesh offers — especially if you haven't seen a large river aarti before. Parmarth Niketan ashram also runs its own aarti on the ghats. It is very crowded in peak season; get there 20–30 minutes early if you want to be near the front.

Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula

The two suspension bridges across the Ganga are the visual centrepiece of Rishikesh and worth crossing at least once. Laxman Jhula is the older of the two (built 1939) and has the more photogenic approach through narrow lanes lined with ashrams and cafes. Note: Laxman Jhula has been closed to foot traffic periodically for repairs — check current status before planning around it.

Yoga and Meditation

Rishikesh has been a yoga destination since before it became a globally known word. The concentration of ashrams, yoga schools, and retreat centres here is unlike anywhere else in India. If you're planning a dedicated yoga stay rather than a passing visit, look at Parmarth Niketan, Sivananda Ashram, or Anand Prakash — all well-established, all welcoming to genuine learners. For a casual drop-in class during a short trip, most mid-range hotels in the Laxman Jhula area can arrange one.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

A Shiva temple at 1,330 m altitude, 32 km from Rishikesh town through a winding forest road. The drive itself is the experience — dense jungle, occasional wildlife sightings, and the arrival at the temple on a hilltop is quite striking. 1.5–2 hours from Rishikesh town, easy to add as a half-day excursion if you have a private vehicle.

Where to Stay in Rishikesh

Where you stay in Rishikesh changes the whole character of the trip:

  • Tapovan area (near Laxman Jhula): The backpacker and long-stay belt. Cheapest options, lots of cafes and yoga studios, quieter at night than central Rishikesh. Good if you want the ashram-and-cafe experience.
  • Ram Jhula area: Slightly more developed, more guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Convenient for both the main ghats and transport options.
  • Rishikesh town / main market: More like a regular town — cheaper hotels, good food options, easier access for people arriving by bus. Less atmospheric than the Jhula belt but more practical for short stays.
  • Shivpuri / Byasi (riverside camps): For the full adventure-camp experience. Camps along the Ganga with rafting, bonfires, and nothing else for miles. The most memorable option for groups who've come specifically for the adventure activities.

Rishikesh Trip Itinerary — 1 Day, 2 Days, 3 Days

1-Day Rishikesh Trip from Dehradun

Leave Dehradun by 7 AM. Reach Shivpuri by 8:30–9 AM and do the rafting run to Rishikesh (arrive early — operators fill up fast in peak season). Lunch at a cafe near Ram Jhula. Walk across the bridge, explore the ghat area. Evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat at sunset. Drive back to Dehradun after. This is a full day and works well as a single-day cab booking.

2-Day Rishikesh Trip

Day 1: Rafting (Shivpuri to Rishikesh), afternoon at leisure in Tapovan, evening aarti. Day 2: Morning yoga class, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple visit, lunch, drive back to Dehradun or continue forward to Haridwar.

3-Day Rishikesh Trip

Day 1: Check in, walk the Jhula belt, evening aarti. Day 2: Full-day rafting on the Marine Drive stretch (longer, better rapids), bonfire at a riverside camp at night. Day 3: Yoga or meditation session, Neelkanth Mahadev, lunch, departure. This is the itinerary we recommend to most first-time Rishikesh visitors who want to cover both the adventure and the cultural sides of the town properly.

Rishikesh in Monsoon — Is It Worth It?

July and August in Rishikesh means green hills, heavy rain, no rafting (river is closed), and significantly fewer tourists. The town has a very different feel — quieter, cooler, more local. If you're coming specifically for yoga, meditation, or the ashram experience and don't care about rafting, monsoon is actually a fine time to visit. If rafting is the main reason, wait for September.

Combining Rishikesh with Haridwar or Devprayag

Rishikesh and Haridwar are only 24 km apart. Most people visit both on the same trip and they genuinely complement each other — Rishikesh is yoga, adventure and cafe culture; Haridwar is full-scale pilgrimage and the Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti which is larger and more elaborate than Rishikesh's. Devprayag, another 70 km further, is where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganga — one of the most photographed river confluences in India and easily added as a half-day stop on the way in or out if you have a private cab.
