Trekking in Uttarakhand: Best Treks, Difficulty, Cost & Season Calendar

June 20, 2026 10 min read Himalaya Highlanders Team

Uttarakhand has more trekking routes per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the Himalayas — from single-day forest walks to high-altitude crossings that take two weeks. Most people planning their first Uttarakhand trek get overwhelmed by the options and either pick something too hard for their first trip, or too easy to be worth the journey. This guide breaks down the major options honestly, with timing, difficulty, and cost — so you can pick the right trek the first time.

How Uttarakhand Treks Are Usually Categorised

Trek difficulty in Uttarakhand is usually described as Easy, Moderate, or Difficult — but these labels are not standardised across operators. What one company calls "moderate" another calls "easy." The more useful variables are: maximum altitude reached, total daily walking distance, and whether the trail involves technical sections (fixed ropes, exposed ridges, river crossings). We've described each trek below using those three measures rather than just a difficulty label.

Best Beginner Treks in Uttarakhand

Nag Tibba Trek (3,022 m)

The most popular first Himalayan trek from Dehradun — and with good reason. The trailhead at Pantwari village is 3 hours from Dehradun, the summit at 3,022 m gives genuine Himalayan views (Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, Kedarnath peak on a clear day), and the total trek is manageable in a weekend: 6 km up on day 1, overnight camp, 6 km down on day 2. No technical sections. Altitude gain is significant enough to feel like an achievement but not enough to cause serious AMS issues for most people. Best done October–March when there may be light snow at the top.

Har Ki Dun Trek (3,566 m)

A 4–5 day valley trek in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, known for the views of Swargarohini and the relatively gentle gradient despite the altitude. The approach goes through Sankri village (the same base as Kedarkantha), and the valley itself has a remote, largely unchanged character — traditional Rawain villages, dense forests, and very few other trekkers compared to the more commercially popular routes. Suitable for first-time trekkers who are reasonably fit and have a full week available.

Best Moderate Treks in Uttarakhand

Kedarkantha Trek (3,810 m)

One of the most satisfying winter treks in India — done between December and April when the trail is snow-covered. The ascent to the summit takes 4–6 hours from the final campsite, and the 360-degree Himalayan panorama from the top (Swargarohini, Kalanag, Kedarnath, Gangotri group) on a clear winter morning is genuinely one of the best things you can experience on a Himalayan trek. Base village is Sankri, 9 hours from Dehradun. 6 days / 5 nights for the full trek. Not recommended for people who have never walked in snow before without prior acclimatisation.

Valley of Flowers Trek (3,658 m)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the rare Himalayan treks that is genuinely unlike anything else in the world during July–August when the valley is in full bloom. The approach is through Govindghat, and the actual Valley of Flowers section is a relatively easy walk from the campsite at Ghangaria — which makes it accessible to a wider range of fitness levels than its altitude suggests. The Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage site is a day-walk from Ghangaria and worth adding. Best window is July 15 to August 31; outside this window the flowers are not at peak and the monsoon makes conditions difficult.

Hampta Pass Trek (4,270 m)

The Hampta Pass trek is technically in Himachal Pradesh (crossing from Kullu to Lahaul) but is typically done as part of a Manali-based package and often combined with a Dehradun departure. The pass crossing itself at 4,270 m is the highest point on this list and involves some steep sections. 5 days / 4 nights. Best done June–September. The most dramatic point of the trek is the contrast between the lush green Kullu side of the pass and the barren, moonscape-like Lahaul side — a kilometre's walk that crosses two completely different climates.

Best Advanced Treks in Uttarakhand

Kedarnath via Vasuki Tal (4,135 m)

Most people do Kedarnath as a pilgrimage (16 km each way), not a trek — but the extension to Vasuki Tal above the temple is one of the most underrated high-altitude walks in Garhwal. The lake sits at 4,135 m and the surrounding peaks include Kedarnath Dome and Chaukhamba. Only for those who are already comfortable at the altitude of the Kedarnath temple itself (3,584 m) and want to go further.

Kheerganga Trek (2,950 m)

Not the highest on this list, but deserves special mention because the natural hot spring at the top makes it uniquely rewarding. 12 km from Barshaini village in the Parvati Valley, through thick rhododendron and pine forest and past the ruins of Nakthan village. A 1-night trek that fits easily into a Kasol or Manali trip. One of the few treks where you can soak in a hot spring at the end of a mountain walk.

What Does a Trek Package from Dehradun Include?

A properly run trek package from Dehradun should include: pickup and drop from Dehradun, transport to the trailhead, all camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mats), all meals from the first night camp to the last morning, a certified trek leader, and a first-aid kit including basic altitude sickness medication. What it does not include: your personal gear (trekking shoes, warm layers, rain cover, torch), your travel insurance, and any personal snacks or drinks beyond what's served at camp.

Approximate per-person cost for a 2-day weekend trek (Nag Tibba) from Dehradun ranges from ₹3,500 to ₹5,500 depending on group size and whether you're sharing a camp or on a private departure. Longer treks scale proportionally — a 6-day Kedarkantha package from Dehradun typically runs ₹9,000–₹13,000 per person.

Things to Carry on Any Himalayan Trek

The single most common preparation mistake on Uttarakhand treks is footwear. Trail running shoes or ankle-support trekking shoes are essential — flat sneakers or sandals are not appropriate above 2,500 m on any of the trails listed above. Beyond that: a warm base layer (temperatures drop to 0°C or below at camp on most of these routes even in summer), a waterproof jacket, a personal water bottle (minimum 1 litre capacity), sunscreen (UV intensity at altitude is significant), and any personal medication. Everything else — tent, sleeping bag, kitchen — is provided on a package trek.
